Commonly known as Hydrocorn or Hydroleca, clay pebbles are an organic growing medium primarily used in recirculating hydroponic systems. Here at Green’s we stock only the finest Gold Label clay pebbles. Gold Label pebbles carry the renowned RHP certified stamp to indicate superior quality and to guarantee peace of mind with your purchase.
Clay pebbles are made by heating clay in a rotating kiln to 1100 – 1200 degrees Celsius. This heating process causes the clay to expand. The end result is a rough finished, highly porous medium that is excellent at retaining moisture, trapping air, and oxygenating any nutrient solution that flows over it.
Using clay pebbles will help speed up plant growth by providing plenty of aeration to the root zone. They also provide a great support structure to give your plants unparalleled stability.
Although most commonly used as a sole substrate in recirculating hydroponic systems such as drip or flood and drain systems, the properties of clay pebbles means they are often used by soil and coco growers as a base layer when potting (to increase drainage) and as a top layer (to reduce the evaporation from the top of the growing medium caused by grow lights).
Gold Label clay pebbles are PH stable and fully inert and are graded to measure 8-16mm in diameter. This uneven arrangement creates an advantageous environment to boost growth; offering plenty of opportunity for drainage, oxygenation at the root zone, beneficial bacterial growth, and root binding for superior stability. RHP is a Dutch standard of quality for horticultural substrates and the premium stamp for all growing media. Any growing medium carrying the RHP stamp is guaranteed to be of a consistent high quality. What are the European standards of measurement?
10L bag = 8L of pot volume
45L bag = 36L of pot volume
A good rule of thumb is to add about two litres of clay pebbles to the bottom of a 10-15L pot. You don't need to use that many to reduce evaporation. A layer or two on top of your soil / coco should be plenty. Are they ready to use?
Yes, but we do recommend you rinse them with water before using them. A simple way to do this is to punch a few small holes in the bottom of the bag and fill the bag with a garden hose (from the top). Can clay pebbles be re-used?
They can but make sure you clean them thoroughly before re-using and remove as much root matter as possible (using Cannazym can help break down old root matter). However, if you can afford it then we usually recommend buying fresh clay pebbles to ensure the best results.Where can I learn more?
