For carbon filters to be truly effective the carbon used needs to have a massive surface area to trap and neutralise odours and smells. An oxidised carbon known as ‘activated carbon’ is used in all good carbon filters. The oxidisation process vastly increases the surface area of the carbon and therefore enhances its ability to trap unwanted smells.
To illustrate the effectiveness of activated carbon, just a single gram will have a surface area greater than 500 metres squared and five grams will have a surface area roughly equal to that of a football pitch – it really is incredible stuff when you look at it this way.
